Owego Wins #1 Spot as America's Coolest Small Town
4/15/2009
A travel magazine has named the Village of Owego the coolest small town in America.
The winner of Budget Travel magazine's contest was announced on the CBS Early Show this morning. Visitors to the magazine's Web site selected the winner by casting their votes.
Competition was tight, with the village beating Rockland, Maine, by about 1,000 votes. Magazine representatives cited Owego's "picture-postcard" look, old architecture and "really fierce local pride."
Owego was one of 22 finalists competing for the honor, including Grinnell, Iowa, and Silverton, Ore. Contestants must have a population under 10,000 and be locales beginning to draw attention because of quality of life, arts and restaurants or proximity to nature, according to the magazine's Web site.
In another marketing contest in November, Binghamton was named Pierogy Pocket Capital of America for the second consecutive year by Mrs. T's in Shenandoah, Pa.
