BU is ranked 37th among public universities and colleges throughout the United States, according to the magazine. The college ranked 34th in 2008 and 37th in 2007.
Among all public and private universities, BU ranked 80th in 2009. Last year, it ranked 77th, and in 2007 it ranked 82nd.
"Obviously, we're proud of this latest accolade that we've received," said BU President Lois B. DeFleur.
The magazine, which hits newsstands Monday, also placed BU on a list of schools whose students graduate with the least amount of debt.
Tuition at Binghamton University is $4,970 for in-state undergraduate students and $12,870 for out-of-state undergrads.
U.S. News & World Report uses several criteria to calculate rankings, including student test scores, and each college's selectivity, retention and student-to-faculty ratios.
BU has approximately 2,100 freshmen students entering this fall, selected from a record 33,613 applications. The entering class has an average SAT score of 1,290 and a high school GPA of 94, according to BU spokesman Ryan Yarosh.
BU has recently received recognition from several national publications.
Many rankings are used by high school seniors and their families in deciding which universities and colleges to apply to, DeFleur said. The reports also raise the visibility of BU, which compared to many universities, is quite young, at slightly more than 60 years old.
"It's really remarkable, our trajectory," DeFleur said.
