Executive Fiala Welcomes Chris Thater

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala joins, Binghamton Mayor Richard Bucci, STOP-DWI Coordinator Jim May and sponsors for a news conference to announce the line-up for the 22nd Annual Chris Thater Memorial Races.

Representatives from New York State's I LOVE NEW YORK campaign will also be on hand. I LOVE NEW YORK is a presenting sponsor for this year's event. The partnership is a tremendous opportunity to further promote the 22 year mission of the Chris Thater Memorial while at the same time highlighting a major summer event in the Southern Tier region of New York State.

The race is named for Chris Thater, a young man killed by a drunk driver. What started as a small cycling event in Chris' memory, has turned into a world class cycling and 5K competition. Despite its tremendous growth and popularity, the core message of the Chris Thater has remained the same, that drinking and driving lead to devastating consequences.

At the news conference, organizers will discuss the cycling and running races and outline all of the activities associated with the Chris Thater this year.

The event takes place August 27th-28th at Recreation Park in Binghamton. More than 1500 athletes are expected to participate and more than 15,000 spectators are expected to turn out to watch the competition. Information about the event can be accessed by logging onto the goBroomeCounty.com website and clicking on the Chris Thater icon on the home page.
