River Road Bridge in Town of Chenango Re-Open to Traffic

Town of Chenango – Broome County Executive Debbie Preston joined Broome County Commissioner of Public Works Dan Schofield and Town of Chenango Supervisor Hal Snopek to officially re-open the River Road (CR 96) Bridge over the NYS&W Railway in the Town of Chenango.

The bridge is located approximately 1.2 miles east of the New York State Route 12 and River Road intersection.

“This project is part of the County’s commitment to make sure our roads and bridges are safe for the people that travel on them,” says Broome County Executive Debbie Preston. “I know the detour was inconvenient for the past four months, but it was necessary to complete this project.”

“We want to thank the County for replacing this bridge, which many residents use daily to go to work and to get their children to and from school, along with providing access for police, fire and ambulance crews in emergency situations,” says Town of Chenango Supervisor Hal Snopek.

“The replacement of the River Road Bridge is another example of Broome County investing in our infrastructure,” says County Legislator Cindy O’Brien. “Ensuring that our roads and bridges are in good condition is a top priority for me and I’m pleased that the bridge is now open for travel.”

About four months ago, an off-site detour route was setup so the old bridge over the railway tracks could be closed and demolished.  The replacement bridge re-opened with no restrictions today.

The bridge contractor will remain on site for an additional 1 - 2 weeks to complete incidental work associated with the project.

Construction of the bridge cost about $1.2 million.
