Local Saxophone Great Given Star on Wall of Stars

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston is proud to join the Friends of the Forum in announcing Richard “Dick” DePofi is the most recent recipient of a Star on its Wall of Stars.

The Friends of the Forum held a ceremony with family and friends to commemorate the occasion on Tuesday.

DePofi, a Union-Endicott graduate, was a well-known tenor saxophone player, not only locally but also nationwide.

He played alongside Dizzy Gillespie, Slam Stewart, Butch Skeene, Al Hamme, Bill Fuster, Tony Monforte and recorded with Pat Monforte’s band “Pat the Kat and his Kittens.”

During that time, he played in several other cities including Wildwood, NJ, Chicago, and Miami Beach.

He also played with Vic Fontaine in the jazz band “Music Unlimited.”

And was a part time member of nationally known ensembles including the Shirelles, the Drifters and the Triners.

“This is a fitting tribute for a man who made a series of contributions to the local and national music scene,” says Broome County Executive Debbie Preston.  “DePofi is now joining his fellow musicians on the Wall of Stars.”

“It is such an honor to again have included on the Wall of Stars , another local music legend,” says Ron Sall, Chairman of the Friends of the Forum.   “Many of the board members were fortunate to have enjoyed Dick perform with others who are also on the Wall of stars. This is a well-deserved tribute to his talent.”

DePofi also played the flute and clarinet.

He passed away on September 3rd, 1996 at the age of 57.

He is the 50th person to be honored with a star.

You can see all the stars on display in the lobby of the Forum Theatre.
