Broome County Executive Recognizes STD Awareness Month

Binghamton, NYIn recognition of STD Awareness Month, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar welcomed several organizations who offer STD Testing, Counseling and Education.

“I wanted to bring all of these organizations together to recognize their commitment to combating STD’s in Broome County,” said Garnar. “STD’s are a big problem for health care in Broome County, but with these groups it is one that is fixable.”

Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis rates have increased in Broome County over the last five years. Last year alone there were 57 more cases of chlamydia than there was the year before and 14 more cases of gonorrhea.

“One of the worst things a person who may have an STD can do is nothing.” Garnar added.

The organizations involved were Family Planning of South Central New York, Southern Tier AIDS Program, Lourdes Hospital, UHS, Cornerstone Family Healthcare, The Decker Student Health Services Center at Binghamton University, the New York State Department of Health and the Broome County Health Department.

Each organization focuses on education and treatment of STD's. All testing is done in a confidential and private setting.
