Broome County Provides $30,000 to Kopernik Science Park

(VESTAL, NY) Broome County Executive Jason Garnar announced today that Broome County is providing $30,000 to the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center for the Kopernik Science Park. The funding is provided from the Hotel/Motel Funds for Marketing and Economic Development.

The Kopernik Science Center has joined with the Junior League of Binghamton, Inc. to construct the Kopernik Science Park. It will be a one-of-a-kind outdoor play space providing a free safe and interactive learning environment focusing on science, technology, engineering and math education on at their location at 698 Underwood Rd in Vestal.


“Kopernik has a long history of educating and entertaining people of all ages,” said Garnar. “Broome County is excited to partner with them and the Junior League of Binghamton to help grow that tradition.”


The resolution to approve the funding was passed by the Broome County Legislature during the August session.


"Kopernik Observatory & Science Center has always pioneered the education of our youth, providing the area with an invaluable source of knowledge, instruction and entertainment," said Daniel J. Reynolds, Chairman of the Broome County Legislature.  "The Broome County Legislature is proud to be a partner in supporting the development of such an innovative expansion at Kopernik."


“Kopernik is very grateful for the support Broome County is giving to the Kopernik Science Park,” said Executive Director Drew Deskur. “The park will be a great resource, not only to Kopernik but to the residents of and visitors to Broome County, giving the children who play in the park an opportunity to learn at the same time.”  


The groundbreaking for the new science park is scheduled for the Fall of 2017.
